Sharks appeared over 400 million years ago, and are thought to be the first animals to develop a complex multi-stage immune system. Although the mechanics of the shark immune system has not been fully studied or understood, sharks do appear to be exceptionally resistant to disease and infection. One of the reasons may be that, while humans have antibodies that are “sleeping” and must be activated to respond to a pathogen, sharks appear to have antibodies that are genetically coded to be ready all the time. Thus the shark may have a much faster and more effective immune response than humans. As well, sharks have two, unique lymphatic organs (the epigonal and Leydig gland) that are found in no other types of animals. Having two additional glands involved in leucocyte (ie: white blood cell) formation may provide superior support to the immune system, but it could also be compensation for the fact that sharks have no bones, the typical location for leucocyte production in humans.
Shark skeletons are made entirely of cartilage, and this may be another factor, as some studies have suggested that shark cartilage tends to inhibit the formation and growth of new blood vessels. Such action may inhibit some pathogenic developments in the body, as such developments may require an increasing oxygen and blood supply to grow and expand their influence on the metabolism.
Other research has focused on shark cartilage as a nutritional aid for joints. It can help provide nutrients that are used in proper chondrification (the building of new cartilage tissue), and some studies indicated that shark cartilage has anti-inflammatory properties.
